Tips from Experienced Drivers
A GOOD PRE-TRIP INSPECTION IS KEY.
You will hear this many times in training, but it's important. Not only will you avoid CSA violations, but you guarantee your safety and that of others on the road. We all know that time is important in trucking, but don't be afraid to take your time doing a thorough pre-trip inspection like you were taught.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD.
Safety first, above all. Don't let yourself be distracted by screens or sightseeing on the road. Trucking is a great way to see the country, but remember you have a job to do. Get a good night of sleep and eat right so you can stay focused.
DON'T BE TOO PROUD TO ASK FOR HELP.
CRST is a nationwide team of truckers working together to achieve one goal. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you are unsure of something. Your trainer and your co-driver are there to support you every step of the way and learning is an important part of driving with us.
REMEMBER, IT’S A PARTNERSHIP.
Driving over the road can be challenging, but it is so much easier if you and your teammate work together when it comes to taking shifts, sleeping and getting in home time. And, because CRST allows you to bring on a partner of your choice, my husband decided to join me. Since then, my team driving experience has been amazing.
KNOW YOUR (AND YOUR TRUCK’S) LIMITS.
There’s a reason CRST puts such a high emphasis on safety training. They want their drivers to feel confident before they ever get out on the road. Best part is you're never alone, so don't be afraid to speak up when you need a break. And don't speed, ever. Tickets are too expensive and, at the end of the day, you’re responsible for keeping yourself and others safe on the road.
WHERE YOU START YOUR DRIVING
With CRST, they set you up with the tools and training you need to get your best start, but you still have to be prepared to work. Say yes to loads, be on time and ask questions and you're pretty much guaranteed a solid driving career with CRST. The first year is always the toughest, but you have to look at it as an investment.
“It was challenging when I started, but I stuck it out. Here I am 15 years and over a million miles later; living proof that CRST will get you where you want to be. For me that was owning my own truck with no one looking over my shoulder.”
“I knew finding a civilian job would be hard, but owning my own business was totally not on my radar. With CRST I was able to use my VA benefits during my driver training and, in only two years, was able to get my own truck through their lease purchase program.”
“I'm so excited to call my husband my co-driver. CRST’s Train Your Partner Program was a win-win for us. Now we get to travel the country together, earning money.”
“My brother Tom and I were working in the service industry with no time to take a real vacation. I told him about CRST’s company-sponsored training program. When we both finished, we asked to be teamed up. Now we're traveling the country. Best move ever.”
“After talking to dozens of carrier recruiters, CRST Expedited really stood out as a place you could earn great money without having to wait years. Yes, OTR would be a challenge, but I knew I could get some serious miles behind me. Now, I own my truck and if it weren’t for that experience, I’d probably still be carrier hopping.”
“I moved to the U.S. in 2015, leaving my home country and all I knew, in search of a better life. Truck driving gave me a purpose; a chance to see my new country and make money. Best of all, I feel like part of the family at CRST and now I have a place to call home.”
